Roadrunner EDI

What IS EDI

Like all good buzzwords EDI sounds as if it will be complicated. But is it really that confusing?

Let's start at the beginning with the acronym itself. EDI stands for Electronic Data Interchange; what that grand sounding phrase actually means is two - or more - computers (Electronic) sharing information (Data) with each other (Interchange). So now we know that EDI is simply computers passing information around, why do people make such a big deal of it? Well, whilst the concept is simple enough, putting the theory into practice may not be as straightforward as it may appear.

Every piece of information stored within Roadrunner can be Imported or Exported using an EDI. However, the first question you should answer before implementing an EDI should always be 'What are the benefits of replacing our existing methodology with an EDI?' If you can't think of any reasons, then the chances are that you don't need an EDI! Why change something just for the sake of it? For hauliers, the most common (and very valid) justification for starting such a project is 'One of our customers wants to send me my jobs using EDI'.

Implementing EDI

Road Tech have many years experience with EDI, from simple e-mail transfers right through to 'True' or 'Full Blown' EDI utilising Industry Standard Message Formats - such as EDIFACT - and Value Added Networks (VANs). As each and every EDI is different depending on the configuration of the communicating systems and the EDI partner's requirements for data exchange, there is clearly no single 'off-the-shelf' solution that will cover all implementations. At Road Tech, we have a team of EDI experts who will work with you and your EDI partners, from initial system specification through development and final implementation. As with all Roadrunner products you will receive full support to ensure that your system continues to perform exactly as required.
